Martes 31 de enero

Hola a todos,

Just a reminder to keep all trinkets (toys, stuffies, etc.) at home. Feel free to have your child bring books, stories they've written at home or journals to write in during their free time. If there is a presentation or show and tell, I will let parents know in advance.

English:

  • Sight words of the week: out, many, then, them, these, so
  • Writing: We are working on writing with descriptive words as well as adding more details to our writing such as writing more than one sentence.
  • Reading: We continue to practice reading strategies with the teacher during our reading groups. This week we are focusing on reading words with the phonic code: b c g h.
  • Here is our writing prompt of the week for writer's workshop:

Resources for Parents:

Spanish:

  • Our "sonidos iniciales" (initial sounds) of the week are: n, f, b, j.
  • We are practicing reading and writing words with these syllables: ba/be/bi/bo/bu, ja/je/ji/jo/ju.
  • We are wrapping up our "El cuerpo humano" (the human body) unit. We have finished creating our monsters and are preparing to present them orally to the class.
  • Writing: We are practicing writing sentences using our flash cards from our mochila (backpack) and showing that we understand the sentences we write in Spanish.
  • Here is our word work activity of the week for writer's workshop:

Math:

  • We continue in our addition (sumas) and subtraction (restas) unit. We are writing word problems in Spanish using our "Friends of 10" addition facts.
  • Practice at home by grouping different objects and asking your child how many are in total. Make friends of 10 or friends of 5 with items or drawings.

Science:

  • We are starting to present our "My 5 Senses" poster to our class and talking about our favourite things from each sense (ex. My favourite sight is flowers in a field).
  • We will be starting to talk about Winter and investigating what is different about winter using our knowledge of the 5 senses. (ex. What do we hear during winter? People scraping snow off their car in the morning, etc.)

Social Studies:

  • We continue our presentations for our "All About My City" posters.

REMINDERS:

Notes from the Music Room

I am happy to say that we are moving along with the preparation of the music for the Spring Concert in March.  Please keep an eye out for an email in the next week asking for help from our wonderful volunteer community.  I will be needing help with props and other performance essentials.

The kindergarten students are learning a new song with very simple vocabulary words:

Hola amigo mio y

Cómo estás tú?

Mucho gusto

We will also be working on simple steps for the Mexican folk dance la Raspa.

The Grade 1s are learning two Venezuelan folk songs:

The first song is:

Our Grade 2 students are busy working on the instrumentation for our Guatemalan song Vamos a la Mar.

Our Grade 3 students are becoming exerts at playing all three different xylophone parts for our song El Barreño.

Our Grade 4 students are creating a very exciting instrumental accompaniment part for their song Al Tambor with the djembe drum, the xylophone and the ukulele.

The Grade 5 students are working very hard at the lyrics for the Zarzuela song La Tarantula.  Please remind your child to visit his teacher’s Google classroom to work on the difficult pronunciation of the lyrics to this song.  This song will be performed at our March concert as well as at the Jubilee for our Que Pasa concert in May.  Details will follow in the next few weeks.
